Regular Social Studies
Regular Social Studies educates students on modern, geopolitical issues stemming from the 17th-20th centuries of Canadian History.
Students will learn of cause-and-effect, human perspective and discover themselves as they make text-to-world connections and gain a better understanding of the world and its people.
Furthermore, an emphasis will be placed on the Canadian effects on Indigenous demographics, truth, and reconciliation.
Courses Offered
Social Studies 9
Prerequisite: Humanities 8
Social Studies 9 exposes students to the major issues of Western Civilization stemming from the 17th and 19th centuries.
Students will explore how different ideologies (see below) have influenced The Indigenous Peoples as well as shifts in global demographics. Moreover, they are expected to understand Canadian physiography.
Social Studies 9 mainly focuses on:
- Imperialism
- Nationalism
- Colonialism
Social Studies 10
Prerequisite: Social Studies 9
Social Studies 10 continues to build on the social, thinking, and personal core competencies developed in Humanities 8 and Social Studies 9.
Students will learn how various events in Canadian History (see below) have influenced the developments of different societal, economic, and political functions in the Canadian Government.
Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on First People's Governance as well as truth and reconciliation in Canada.
Social Studies 10 mainly focuses on:
- The functions of different Canadian political institutions
- Canadian Ideologies
- The evolution of The Canadian Identity
- Canadian conflicts and discriminatory decree
- Canada's role in the global economy
Exploration in Social Studies 11
Prerequisite: Social Studies 10
Exploration in Social Studies 11 covers many local, real-world, and modern problems (see below) designed to pique student interests in the geopolitical and economic climate of the world.
Social Studies 11 mainly focuses on:
- The effects of 20th century revolutions
- Issues of worldwide, contemporary Indigenous peoples
- Global economic development
- Individual rights in Canada
- Religion and culture
- The effects of modern media
