Specialized Social Studies

R.C Palmer Secondary School offers a variety of specialized Social Studies courses in order to pique student interests in modern topics they can explore and establish themselves in professionally.

Students will explore and thoroughly scrutinize selections of real-world, 20th century issues and events, learning of its nuances and applying them to real life.

Topics explored in these courses are sensitive and will require students to consider a variety of ethical perspectives, human rights, and encompass a greater sense of civic responsibility, which prepares them to become better informed, educated citizens.

Please note, studying the entire curriculum to social studies 11 is not required for students to begin specializing in social studies. However, it is recommended.


 

Courses Offered

20th Century History
Prerequisite: Social Studies 10

20th Century History teaches students of recent historical events (see below) that help them understand the circumstances that shaped modern society.

Students will analyze cause-and-effect as they connect historical patterns with present day issues such as technological advancement, conflict, and human rights.

Moreover, students will strengthen their skills of critical thinking and source evaluation as they cover topics like totalitarianism and propaganda.

20th Century History covers:

- WWI & WWII
- The Cold War
- Migrations of ethnic groups
- International treaty and alliance
- Societal and cultural development
 

Law 12
Prerequisite: Social Studies 10

Law 12 provides students a basic overview of the Canadian Legal System and is designed to pique student interest in the field.

Students will consider how law affects human rights and responsibility in Canadian society as well as its influence in various present day and historical social changes.

Moreover, students taking this course will be given the opportunity to attend a field trip to the Vancouver Court of Law to participate in various mock trials.

Law 12 covers:

- The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
- Human rights
- Civil legal systems
 

BC First Peoples 12
Prerequisite: Social Studies 10

BC First Peoples 12 gives students the opportunity to study the cultures, worldviews, and practices of The Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Moreover, they will scrutinize the effects of colonization on Indigenous policies as well as resistance efforts made by the Indigenous Peoples against colonization as they continue their journey of reconciliation.

BC First Peoples 12 covers:

- Indigenous economics
- Indigenous culture
- Indigenous politics
- Colonization
 

Psychology 12
Prerequisite: Social Studies 10

Psychology 12 provides students a basic overview of human behaviors and is a course designed to pique student interest in the field.

Learning of the roots of most human behaviors, students will be given the chance to study their own convictions and actions while being given the resources to empower them thoughtfully and with purpose.

Psychology 12 covers:

- The history of psychology
- Intelligence
- Group psychology
- Stress
- Personality
- Personality disorders
