One of Canada's official languages, students learning French enrich themselves culturally, learn to recognize romantic dialect, and unlock a valuable working language at many international levels, career opportunities in turn.

 
​Students will learn of the main core competencies of reading, writing, oral-speaking, and listening. Moreover, French culture is an integrated part of the program as students explore authentic French stories and creative works — Au revoir!

Courses Offered

French 8
Prerequisite: Grade 7 

Bonjour! French 8 is an introductory level course that builds upon students' French foundations already established in elementary school.

An emphasis is placed on oral-based skills (see below). Thus, students should expect to participate in many beginner-level skits, role-plays, and French"sondages" throughout the year.

French 8 emphasizes:

- Conversation skills
- Basic prepositions/descriptors
- Participation
- Presentation
 

French 9
Prerequisite: French 8

Salut! French 9 expands on the big ideas and skills developed in French 8 as students' language productions are sophisticated through an emphasis of writing and variety of speaking mediums, such as music, film, and stories.

Moreover, vocabulary used in authentic, everyday life will be expanded on as students become conversational in the language.

French 9 emphasizes:

- Writing skills
- Basic grammar
- Participation
- Presentation
 

French 10
Prerequisite: French 9

Bienvenue! French 10 stresses oral and written work equally as students begin to explore the nuances of French, learning to form word tenses in the past, present, and future.

Students should expect an emphasis to be placed on cooperative/communicative group work as they become fluent in French.

French 10 emphasizes:

- Writing skills
- Conversation skills
- Intermediate grammar 
- Collaborative work
 

French 11
Prerequisite: French 10

Coucou! French 11 continues to work students' grammar, pronunciation, listening, and oral skills as students explore thematic and cultural French topics.
 
Students are expected to use advanced language concepts, such as idioms, to respond to various text types in longer, more complex sentences.

French 11 emphasizes:

- Writing skills
- Conversation skills
- Advanced grammar 
 

French 12
Prerequisite: French 11

Salutations! French 12 continues to cement students' French knowledge in every quadrant including grammar, pronunciation, listening, and oral-skills are they prepare to move onto higher education.

Students will be expected to use advanced language concepts in both writing and speaking as they become near-native speakers of French.

French 12 emphasizes:

- Writing skills
- Conversation skills
- Advanced grammar
