Senior Chemistry
Grade 11-12 Students at R.C Palmer Secondary School have the option to choose chemistry as one of their senior science courses.
The courses listed below introduce students to a wide range of chemistry topics based off the fundamental skills learned in junior chemistry. Thus, it is recommended that students are competent in their knowledge before initiating a course.
That said, students will explore a wide range of chemistry topics — helping them both understand the various behaviours of matter and apply their knowledge in real life settings.
Note: students will require a scientific calculator as the following courses involve complex mathematical problem-solving.
Courses Offered
Chemistry 11
Prerequisite: Chemistry 10 and Math 10
Chemistry 11 is an introductory course emphasizing the formal processes of science, which includes:
- Technical lab skills
- Data analysis
- Problem solving
- Observations of experimental phenomena
That said, along with additional learning opportunities — such as nuclear chemistry — students will learn of the following main topics, allowing them to develop a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of chemistry:
- Atomic theory
- Molar concepts
- Stoichometry
- Organic chemistry
Chemistry 12
Prerequisite: Chemistry 11
Chemistry 12 places an emphasis on students' problem-solving, understanding, and critical thinking competencies as they cover substantial laboratory work —
demanding a solid foundation of the concepts explored in chemistry 11 to be proficient.
That said, students are expected to cover the following main concepts as they become educated, science citizens:
- Kinetics
- Chemical equilibrium
- Solubility laws
- Electrochemistry
