AP & Enriched Biology
Beyond regular senior science, grade 11-12 students at R.C Palmer Secondary School may also choose to take AP and enriched biology courses.
Designed for passionate, skilled students, these courses accelerate and enrich the covered material, up to fully cover the subsequent years'.
Thus, students who score a 73% (B) average or higher in their course are given course credit, allowing them to skip the subsequent subject grade.
It is recommended that students that apply for these courses receive a recommendation from their teacher and/or have maintained an A (90%) in their previous chemistry courses for the best ability to succeed.
Courses Offered
Life Sciences 11 Enriched
Prerequisite: Science 10
Life Sciences Enriched 11 is an accelerated and enriched course placing an emphasis on the scientific processes and critical thinking skills required for a successful scientific career.
Including the following material below, students will explore the varying complexities of living organisms and their biological processes:
- Genetics and The Hardy-Weinburg Equilibrium
- Microbiology
- Botany and Mycology
- Zoology and Ecology
- Phylogeny
Anatomy and Physiology 12 Enriched
Prerequisite: Life Sciences 11 or Chemistry 11
Anatomy and Physiology 12 Enriched allows students to explore the various components and functions of the human body in-depth
— all while placing an emphasis on biochemistry and various elements of cell biology.
Anatomy and Physiology 12 Enriched covers:
- Microbiology
- Biochemistry
- Enzymatic reactions
- Human organ system
- Genomic expression and control
AP Biology 12
Prerequisite: Life Sciences 11, passed or is currently taking anatomy and physiology 12
Following the College Board AP Curriculum, this course is equivalent to a first-year biology course at university.
Thus, students that write the AB, BC exams in May and that score a 4 or higher are granted AP chemistry 12 credit; This allows the student to skip the first year of biology in university.
That said, studies show that students that have taken this course preform significantly better than students that took other biology courses in high school.
AP Biology 12 mainly covers:
- Ecology and phylogeny
- Genomic expression and control
- Descriptive biology
- Laboratory
